Nissan leaves Russia – Auto – Kommersant

The Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that its Federal State Unitary Enterprise is receiving Nissan’s Russian assets. We are talking about both the plant in St. Petersburg and sales. The described scheme is almost identical to the departure of a member of the alliance with Nissan Renault from the Russian Federation: the assets of the French company went to Moscow, and the share in AvtoVAZ went to NAMI, subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Nissan, as in the case of AvtoVAZ, Renault, will have an option to buy assets within six years, and even the domestic concern will be engaged in servicing cars.

Nissan’s executive committee has approved the sale of its Russian assets to Nissan Manufacturing Rus to NAMI, a subsidiary of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the ministry said.

RecallEarlier, in May, officials received the assets of the French member of the Renault-Nissan alliance. The parameters described in Nissan’s departure statement are similar: it is reported that the deal involves the transfer of 100% of Nissan’s assets in Russia (under the control of the legal entity Nissan Manufacturing Rus) to NAMI, including production and a sales center in Moscow. Even the maintenance of Nissan cars in Russia will now be handled by the former asset of Renault AvtoVAZ.

An important condition is the option to buy back Nissan Manufacturing Rus’ stake, which can be exercised over the next six years, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Renault has a similar option to buy out its stake in AvtoVAZ, but in the case of the French company, this depends on the supply of components to the domestic plant.

Production at the Nissan plant in St. Petersburg started in 2009. The production capacity is 100 thousand cars per year, but much less was produced. In 2021, the plant increased production by 17%, up to 45,000 Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Murano, Nissan Qashqai models. In 2021, 51.4 thousand cars under the Nissan brand were sold on the Russian market. The market share was 3.1%.

“On behalf of Nissan, I would like to thank our Russian colleagues for their contribution to the development of our business over the years. We are currently unable to reopen our facilities, so the best possible solution has been found to support our employees,” said Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida.
