Nina Shatskaya surprised fans with a new song: “For the first time I caught a pop rhythm”

The outgoing year has become a very contrasting experience for Nina Shatskaya. The singer performed on various stages, held an exhibition of her photographs, presented a musical and poetic performance. A new song was released on all platforms, which for the diva of Russian romance became a kind of bridge to pop music. “ZD” finds out the details.
The track “There are Women” for Nina Shatskaya is an atypical record, to put it mildly. In the song there is nothing at least partly reminiscent of the romance familiar to the singer’s fans. But there is a pop rhythm, a tenacious chorus and a healthy frivolity. Perhaps, from the outside, all this seems to be a slightly simplified version of what the artist is used to doing, but Nina herself claims that she went to such music for a long time.
“As a girl, I dreamed of singing ABBA hits, but nothing worked out for me. And then many times I tried to turn to pop music, but it didn’t seem to accept me. But now it’s happened, ”the singer says in an interview with ZD.
Everything happened largely thanks to an unexpected ally. The role of the latter was performed by the singer Ekaterina Semenova. Those who are older probably remember how she made a rustle in the charts in the eighties with her hits “Girlfriends Married for a Long Time”, “For a Minute”, “Love is Beautiful and Sad.” Over time, the media noise around Semenova subsided a bit, but the music that Ekaterina has been writing for many years only herself appears regularly, so the singer does not sit without work. It was at work that colleagues met.
“We were among those invited to the film festival in Nalchik, and when we were driving from the airport to the hotel, Katya turned on this song in the car,” recalls Nina Shatskaya. – In general, I recognize the songs that can be mine from the first chords and words. I just got goosebumps, I immediately realized that I wanted to sing it. And Katya, without hesitation at all, gave it to me. I then approached it for a long time, it was not easy to adapt to such music, but at the studio, arranger Vasily Goldarovsky managed to fit me very organically into this format. In Katya’s version, it sounds more dramatic. And I suddenly managed to make it very light. She became a discovery for herself in this song. Everyone who has been to my concerts knows that complex forms attract me. I need to suffer about life. But not in this song.
It can be assumed that a multi-stage musical education, combined with an impressive experience in which there is jazz, romances, and retro, could have developed in Nina Shatskaya a slight snobbery in relation to variety art and pop music. But the singer does not suffer from anything similar. Perhaps pop music is new territory for her as a performer, but a fairly explored landscape as a person who is certainly capable of appreciating real talent.
“Whitney Houston, Elton John is amazing, in my opinion, pop music,” says Nina. – If you return to Russia, then Alla Pugacheva had wonderful songs. It seems to be ironic, but at the same time deep. The stage, which was written by Arno Babajanyan, was essentially pop music. Raymond Pauls composed songs that seemed to be uncomplicated, but very interesting. As a touring person, of course, I have a big playlist, and there is a lot of very different music in it. There is Morricone and Rachmaninoff. But apart from them – Joe Cocker, Diana Krall, Caesarea Evora, Chris Rea. I really like the albums that Paul McCartney recorded with Wings, I listened to them as a child, we had them at home on vinyl records. Recently, I often listen to the Georgian group Mgzavrebi.
Such a spread of interests will probably make it possible not to limit the trip to the stage to just one song. And Nina Shatskaya has an intention to continue, especially since Ekaterina Semenova is now not just her good friend and colleague, but a potential author of new songs.
“Katya showed me a few more of her compositions, and I liked them. These are very positive songs. Still, romances, as a rule, are in minor, but here it’s a completely different matter, says Nina Shatskaya. – Probably the first time I caught this pop rhythm. As a rule, I avoid a hard rhythm when I sing, I swing all the time. And I always want to add some theatricality, which is an excess in pop music. But when recording “There are Women” I still managed to balance between romance and pop chanson. I never thought I could.”
