The Japanese company Mitsubishi has decided to retain its stake in the Sakhalin-2 LNG project. Mitsubishi is going to notify the new Russian operator about this by the end of August. Mitsui, which owns a stake in the project, also intends to stay in the project. This was reported by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei with reference to sources.
According to the Nikkei, Russia must decide whether to retain Mitsubishi’s and Mitsui’s shares in the new operator within three days of receiving the notice. At the same time, the newspaper notes that it is still unknown whether the Russian side will agree to keep their shares in Sakhalin-2.
Later, Reuters, citing a Mitsubishi representative, said that the company would send the necessary documents by September 4.
Formerly Japanese authorities asked Mitsui and Mitsubishi remain involved in the project. According to media reports, none of the eight Japanese companies receiving LNG under Sakhalin-2 has expressed a desire to refuse supplies. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin translated Sakhalin-2 operator to Russian jurisdiction.
