Apparently, more than once the musician has denied comparisons with the infamous American writer Charles Bukowski, whose work is filled with deep alcohol trips, sprees and frank erotic stories under the influence of all kinds of substances. Heroes of Bukowski usually live at the very bottom of society, wander, beg and violate all possible norms of decency. He, like another brawler Hunter Thompson, is especially loved by Johnny Depp and adored by Mickey Rourke. But Nick Cave has a more traditional view of literature.
“I appreciate that you tried to flatter me out of kind feelings and all, but I don’t like this person. This is a well-known fact,” Cave added in a reply to Simon. “I just don’t like Charles Bukowski. In my opinion, Bukowski is a “bad poetry bukkake” who just throws his trash around.” The bukkake comparison is a very sordid comparison to an Asian porn perversion, like ejaculation on the face, which can make the faint of heart vomit, but apparently that’s what Cave was counting on. Although the comparison of his work with Bukowski, so despised by him, is quite logical and has quite tangible grounds – in his literary attempts (Cave wrote a couple of books and several film scripts), he also uses immoral heroes who get lost in life and cannot get out of adventures in alcoholic frenzy.
A couple of years ago, responding to a similar comparison in an interview, Nick Cave called Bukowski’s poetry lame. He also added: “He (Bukowski) once said that ‘poetry is like taking shit, smelling it, and then washing it away.’ To write is to leave behind as much stink as possible, which is very good, except that he applied it to all poetry, when he should have applied it exclusively to his own … His poetry is really stupid, stupid shit, sickly sentimental, and he treated his own place in the world with absolute contempt.” But no matter how the offended Nick Cave crucifies himself in his slander, ordinary readers and listeners still find his work similar to Bukowski every now and then. Karma is an evil thing…
