In the golden age of TV shows, their popularity was built on the vicious appeal of anti-heroes: characters such as Tony Soprano, Tyrion Lannister and Walter White set the agenda for the series. But then a “new sincerity” broke out on TV, and cute characters, whom we love because they are kind, have registered in the TV show.
“Shitts Creek”

The ruined Rose family, having collected the remnants of former luxury in a couple of suitcases, moves to the town of Shitts Creek, which the head of the family once bought entirely for fun. Having settled in a roadside motel, the former pampered rich understand how much a pound is dashing, and find out that, in addition to Hollywood stars, other people live in the world. The inhabitants of Shitts Creek seem to the arrogant Roses to be a creepy redneck. But pretty soon they will realize that these are sincere, gentle and disinterested neighbors, without whom they cannot survive. The outsider series from Canada was criticized by critics for its “toilet humor”, but by the final, sixth season, it became a hit and hit the jackpot at the Emmy TV Awards – because the power is in kindness.

“Ted Lasso”
USA, 2020 – present
Unlike Shitts Creek, the series about a good-natured football coach from America who is hired by a vengeful English divorcee to sink her ex-husband’s football club shot right away. Even comedian Jason Sudeikis, who invented his character based on an old sketch about the difference between the football traditions of England and America, did not expect such a success. It suddenly turned out that in hysterical times the public needs just such a hero – with Buddhist calmness, responding to pokes and shouts with a smile and some kind of stupid pun and calling on everyone to unite and live together.

“After Life”
UK, 2019–2022
Even the most cynical British comedian Ricky Gervais, who once created the dumb bureaucrat David Brent, the anti-hero of The Office, smelled the new series trend “back to kindness”. In the new show, Gervais did not stop cynically grinning: his hero, a provincial journalist, after the death of his wife, begins to consider the world a terrible hole and thinks about suicide. But even this complete misanthrope eventually opens his eyes when he finds around people who are sincerely trying to brighten up his dull existence.
“The Mandalorian”
USA, 2019 – present
The first series in the history of the legendary Star Wars franchise shot viewers in the heart when it gave the ruthless bounty hunter Baby Yoda, a green-eared baby creature with cute saucer eyes, a companion. In order to save the baby from adversaries, a stern warrior from the Mandalorian tribe, hiding his face under a helmet, violates the laws of his guild and goes on the run: he was ordered to deliver a green creature to a cruel customer for experiments, and instead he saved the baby and became his father – may he be him Strength.
“Amazing Stories”
USA, 2020
Steven Spielberg’s anthology of that name first aired in 1985 and consisted of highly poignant melodramas, comedic horror stories, war movies and simple detective stories. In 2020, Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz relaunched it and captured the main feature of the original – the romantic-sentimental mood that Spielberg imbued all his fantastic stories with. It’s an old-fashioned show, mostly family tales that reek of eighties sweet sentimentality so much that even the supernatural element fades into the background.

“Cleaning woman. The story of a single mother
USA, 2021
The story about a maiden in trouble who ran away from her rapist husband with a tiny daughter in her arms has become another phenomenon of the “good new TV”. In the best Dickensian traditions, the heroine constantly gets out of the fire and into the frying pan, getting a job in a cleaning agency for a hard and low-paid job. But in a cruel world that is not prone to sentiment, there are always generous patrons who are ready to help her out of trouble. It is a lulling therapeutic spectacle for those mournful in spirit who need a breath of optimism—that is, in modern times, for almost everyone.
“AJ and the Queen”
USA, 2020
The same plot as in The Mandalorian, but instead of a traveling warrior, here a drag queen travels aground, played by RuPaul with abandon. As a lost orphan in need of protection, the impudent girl Aja acts as a boy: her mother, a drug addict, has once again been swept up by the cops and she needs to get to Texas “to grandpa.” The queen is going to a provincial competition to break the main jackpot of 25 thousand and start life anew – and categorically does not want to take on the burden of an orphan child. But kindness can’t be hidden behind a layer of make-up and stage glitter – so get your handkerchiefs ready and this kindest story will take you by the throat.
“Good Omens”
UK, US, 2019 – present
The story of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley is based on the premise that the good and evil they do nullify each other all the time, which means it’s better not to strain, but simply send fake reports on the work done to heaven and hell. Their impeccable plan goes haywire when Armageddon comes to earth, so bosom buddies from various overworld departments have to roll up their sleeves and save this stupid planet where they have taken root so comfortably. Neil Gaiman filmed his joint creation with Terry Pratchett with touching meticulousness out of respect for the deceased co-author, and David Tennant and Michael Sheen showed truly unearthly joint screen chemistry in it.
“Ann”
Canada, 2017–2020
Canadian series about a red-haired girl from an orphanage. Her overactive imagination repels would-be parents because Ann talks too much and opens up to everything—every wonderful experience. By mistake, she is sent to live with an old farmer and his devout sister, who needed a boy to help with the housework. But just like that, the old people cannot put the girl out the door – and a story begins in which no evil and injustice can resist the wide-open eyes and mild disposition of the red-haired orphan. Fans of Anne of Green Gables (the 1908 novel on which the series is based) snorted for three seasons, and when the show ended they started petitioning for more kindness!
“Jack Richer”
USA, 2022 – present
Retired police officer Reacher sleeps in motels, dresses in second-hand clothes and drives around one-story America on buses – this is the right guy, responsible and clean. That is why he always gets involved in history and helps simple kind people in the outback forgotten by God to curb some vile murderers and corrupt officials. This exemplary Americana was written by the Englishman Lee Child – at the heart of his approach was irony in relation to the noir genre, but quickly disappeared. In total, 27 detective stories about a good-natured thug who lives and acts without a fig in his pocket and does not sin with moral ambivalence came out – that is, there is a big backlog of kindness, backed up by Reacher’s strong fists.
