Netflix released the series “Ferry” about a drug dealer from Brabant, which was conceived as a crime comedy, but unexpectedly reads as a social drama and criticism of capitalism.

Those who see Ferry Bowman (Frank Lammers) for the first time will hardly think that this funny guy with a beer belly is a desperate gangster and drug dealer. More like a loser who, due to some misunderstanding, sells pills in a depressive outback. This is exactly what old Ferry is doing in the first scenes of the series: desperately trying to persuade unsightly clients to “think globally and charge more,” while they refuse and blow bubbles. The pinnacle of Ferry’s great business strategy should be the sale of a bag of pills to a newcomer who swaggers, but is clearly “on treason,” as they call a very frightened person in these circles. The deal predictably breaks down: the guy fusses too much at the sight of the cops parking at the diner, attracts their attention – and now Ferry, having scattered the bag of coins he received for the goods (did this fool buyer collect them on the porch?), takes off running, abandoning the car .

The first impression, as usual, is deceptive: fifty-year-old chemistry teacher Walter White at the beginning of the series “Breaking Bad” also looked like a morel – and what abysses later opened up in him! Yes, and Tony Soprano from “The Sopranos” At first he seemed like some kind of stuffed pea: a comical fat man in depression. For those who have seen the Nico Molenaar and Bart Uytdenhoeven series Undercover (2019–2021) and the prequel film Ferry (2021), the image of the Belgian drug dealer Ferry Bouman is much more significant. In the series, Ferry is a seasoned drug lord on the crest of an ecstasy wave, and the prequel film depicts his career development in Amsterdam, where he broke the woods and became a killer, and then met his girlfriend Danielle (Elisa Schaap). You would never have thought that a pot-bellied guy could do this? So Dan didn’t know, but he was forced – otherwise there was no way to save her unlucky brother Lars (Yannick van de Velde) from the mafia.

In the current series, Ferry is in the middle of his journey – no longer a boy, but not yet a boss. Three goons work for him, one of them is the same Lars – a talented “cooker” who built an underground drug laboratory in the garage and makes the best MDMA tablets in the area. Ferry is trying to get ahead on this, but his business is bad – his turnover is small, and all the money he earned in Amsterdam was spent on buying a house for Danielle, which they proudly call a “chalet,” but there is almost no money left for living. And then an amazing fortune comes his way: the police imprison Ari Tuck (Steph Kuipers), the largest local drug dealer. As a result, the Pusaka biker club is losing out on a promising supply to Australia, which would have opened up a new market for the Belgians and allowed their beer bellies to bask in the sun for a long time. But our Ferry is right there: he is ready to go out of his way and in a short time, with his gang of goons, establish the production of as many as a million tablets, if they pay him not one euro per piece, but five. But you will have to fight for your place in the sun: there is blood everywhere on Lille fabric, on Brabant lace.

The series was conceived and implemented as a crime comedy, but the most interesting thing about it is not Ferry’s dangerous adventures at all – there are similar collisions in every second series about drug trafficking. Here, the depressive background shimmers with all the colors of the spectrum, which is much more interesting to consider: here it is, the backwater of old Europe, where culture is museumized, politics is regulated, the economy is globalized, social elevators rusted in the last century, a proud disposition has to be sheathed, and the spirit of entrepreneurship has to be applied nowhere else. Ferry is only a seemingly harmless paunch of his early youth, but in fact, behind this mask – a typical “philistine purr” – the ambition of a young Rastignac blazes in him, and the excitement of a frontier conqueror plays in his blood. He cannot, like his bosom friend Marco (Kuhn De Grave), work tirelessly for 20 years in a hairdressing salon so that in his old age he can afford to buy a jacuzzi and put together a modest capital to open his own cosmetics company. He needs more – he needs the whole world. Well, at least all of Brabant. Therefore, he will tell Marco that one of the ingredients for the production of shampoo is also suitable for the production of tablets – and even the timid hairdresser will have something light up in his eyes, some kind of reflection of unprecedented profits. It’s fun and scary to watch how bandit entrepreneurs emerge from the pot-bellied inhabitants and lumpen of the quiet European outback, it’s fun and scary: it’s like reading “Capital”, translated into current realities.
