TVMagazine. – You say you like that the viewer can identify with the character, do you need that too?

Marina Hands. – No, I need to have empathy. As in life, I have empathy for people who are very different from me, just out of curiosity. In my roles, and there particularly, it is a discovery of the other. This empathy is an emotional approach, the character must touch me deeply, that I want to defend him.

So you prefer to play people different from you?

I have more empathy for myself than before but I don’t see the point! (smile) I really need to enrich myself with the difference.

What does it mean to “have more empathy» for you ?

If something comes close to me, it may interest me too. But my driving force is to discover another woman. The less I have to answer about a role that is going to be offered to me, the more I will want to commit.

You get involved I imagine a lot then in the preparation?

Yes, because I hate to do the same thing again. And I had never played a role close to that of Sterenn. The preparation was fierce, the filming too. I can’t switch from my personality to his easily. Pierre Monnard, the director, helped me build, invent this woman. In particular, he wanted my voice to be lower, that I be very earthy. We met cops, I saw films, documentaries, I read. I spent three months in Switzerland without returning. It is a more Anglo-Saxon immersion work.

For you who are curious, it must be exciting to meet someone like Sofiane Zermani, who comes from a different universe and probably doesn’t have the same approach to work…

I meet people who work a lot, like me, in a committed way. But it’s not the majority. And often, it lacks the passion. And that, at Fianso, is immediate. I’m looking for this freshness, this enthusiasm, it’s like a safeguard. Having less control allows you to take risks. There’s nothing worse than working with jaded people, it’s maddeningly sad. He wants every day to do justice to the chance he is given.

After a staggered series like mythdid you want to confront a more classic whodunnit?

First of all, it’s something I’ve never done. Then the complexity of the female character. I like antiheroines. Are we going to judge her? Hate her? love it? As a woman, it seems important to me to shake people up in this place, my character having a form of amorality, immorality. Lying is moreover a point in common with myth.

What does it bring to your work to belong to the Comédie Française?

This allows me to go into the history of the art of the actor. This art can last a lifetime. It is serious. Being an actor is sometimes seen as a luxurious, easy thing, whereas it is a commitment. Belonging to the Comédie Française means sticking to great texts, transmitting the repertoire, the thoughts of the authors, their outlook on society. It’s not always about yourself.

Is it a more laborious vision, in the good sense of the term, and educational of the profession?

Yes, that’s the great strength of theatre. It is an ancestral form of relationship with the public which questions the responsibility of the actor. When we shoot, we produce bubbles, moments. I like the idea that my role is something I think about on a daily basis.
