Opera is the embodiment of what is usually colloquially understood by the word “pathos.” Pompous feelings, large gestures, importance, exaggeration and unnaturalness. Moreover, in fact, in the history of the opera genre there are many works that addressed the broadest masses very directly – with the pathos of not a priest, but a rally speaker. Here we remember, first of all, the operas of Giuseppe Verdi, and the progressive Italian public of the 1850s, which the reactionary censorship actually perceived as a “collective organizer” of the national liberation movement.
