“Murder at the End of the World”: a new series from the authors of “OA”

The Hulu service releases the series “Murder at the End of the World” by the intellectual author duo of “OA” creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij – not so complicated, but detective and touchingly romantic.

Imagine that in True Detective, instead of two seasoned cynical men, a serial killer is caught by two tremulous lovers from the series “Normal people”. And the detective line holds attention precisely because it is preceded by a love line – although here it is not a line, but rather a dotted line.
In the opening scenes of the series, pink-haired girl Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) goes to a bookstore for the launch of her debut novel. She has headphones on her head and The Doors in her headphones. Not every series starts with an ending, but “this is the end, my friend, the end of our plans – I’ll never look into your eyes again,” Morrison sings, and the series will continue to illustrate the song: the plot will include danger on the outskirts of the town, and highway to the west, and a killer who wakes up at dawn and puts on boots and a mask.
But while only fragile at first glance, Darby goes to the bookstore. Her true crime novel is called Silver Doe, but this is a play on words: “Silver Doe” here means “unidentified murdered woman wearing silver earrings,” since police reports refer to unidentified murder victims as John Doe or Jane Doe. Darby’s father was the county coroner, which is where she begins the presentation: “I spent a lot of time around the dead. Every year, several deaths remain unidentified. At the moment there are forty thousand of them, half of them victims of murder, and the majority are women.” The audience, who rushed to the exit after the previous presentation, returns – Darby managed to interest them.
Marling and Batmanglij seem to have no random details at all, everything is connected to everything – from Morrison’s text to the returning book audience. Netflix cut off their first series “OA” (2016–2019) at the most interesting point, because it was too strange: the story of a blind girl who disappeared in an unknown place, who was found seven years later, regained her sight and began to talk about traveling through parallel worlds. between different genres, it lurched from one fantastic plot twist to another – and many viewers left. Those who remained, however, proclaimed “OA” the new “Twin Peaks”, and they don’t need to explain anything about Marling and Batmanglij. But the current series is much more conventional and watchable, and it is impaled on a love story.
“It’s very strange to fall in love for the first time while you’re looking for a serial killer,” Darby says. She met Bill (Harris Dickinson) on a forum for amateur detectives – he was interested in the assumption that Jane Doe’s silver earrings did not belong to her: young girls don’t wear them, which means they were planted by the killer. Bill and Darby began driving around the country looking for bodies (“Take the highway west, baby,” Morrison sings), but then Bill left, leaving a note instead of goodbye: “It’s both too much and not enough for me. I left you the car.” (“It hurts to let you go,” Morrison sings.)
So Darby writes a book, hits the limelight, and is suddenly invited to a polar retreat in Iceland by eccentric millionaire technocrat Andy Ronson (Clive Owen), married to former famous hacker Leigh Anderson (Brit Marling herself), who was Darby’s childhood idol. . In addition to the “Generation Z Sherlock,” as Darby is called, other out-of-the-box thinkers are invited there – a female astronaut, an environmental activist, an architect, a director, and so on. All of them, according to the tech tycoon, will help him save the world. But, as Morrison sang, the killer woke up before dark, put on his shoes and walked down the corridor – a murder is committed in an Icelandic hotel at the end of the world, and true crime with a search for the serial number becomes a hermetic murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. “Death is no more than the spirit of our times: mutating viruses, the destruction of nature, the end of democracy. Death is everywhere,” says Andy Ronson on a sad occasion, and it’s hard to argue with him. But Darby takes up the investigation. Once she interested Bill, saying that she knew how to listen to the dead – the moment had come to show this skill. Viewers of Marling and Batmanglij also need one simple skill: to trust the authors and forget about conventions. These people count on those who have “the doors of perception open”: Morrison liked this phrase so much that he named the group after it.
