MTS explained why it does not want to introduce unlimited distribution of mobile Internet

Telecom operator MTS does not intend to charge fees for unlimited Internet distribution. The company explained that the absence of restrictions for a number of users who use the mobile network for torrents and streaming will lead to a deterioration in the quality of communication for most subscribers. MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 previously agreed to cancel the fee for Internet distribution at the request of the Federal Antimonopoly Service.

“Current tariffs for mobile communications are economically designed for individual traffic consumption from smartphones and mobile devices. For laptops and desktop computers, a different line of tariffs is provided, since this class of devices consumes many times more traffic per unit of time,” MTS noted (Kommersant has a press release).

The operator indicated that if the cost of traffic for all categories of devices is equalized, operators will be forced to raise its cost for all tariffs. “In this way, ordinary subscribers with smartphones will actually pay for subscribers who actively distribute traffic,” MTS added.

Back in the summer, subscribers of the four largest telecom operators – MTS, MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 – complained that the “Modem Mode” service, which involves unlimited distribution of mobile Internet, became paid. As of September 18, the cost of Internet distribution from the Big Four was about 100 rubles. per month. FAS called this practice unlawful and threatened operators in cases of violation of antimonopoly legislation.

October 30 FAS reportedthat the operators MegaFon, Beeline and Tele2 have agreed to cancel the fee for Internet distribution. MegaFon has abolished charging fees for traffic distribution from October 23. Tele2 intends to cancel the fee for new customers from November 22, and for all its customers from December 19. Beeline has not yet announced the exact timing of the return of free distribution of Internet traffic. The operator plans to assess the timing of the technical implementation of the abolition of fees for this service by the beginning of December.
