The MS-21 aircraft may have a long-haul version that will be able to fly non-stop from at least Moscow to Vladivostok, said Yury Slyusar, General Director of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). The maximum flight range of the MS-21 is now 5100 km. The UAC is also considering the creation of a twin-engine version of the Il-96 and a shortened version of the Tu-214.
“We are also considering a long-haul narrow-body aircraft, a kind of conditional analogue of the A321 XLR, in order to be able to fly almost non-stop from Moscow to Vladivostok. On the one hand, this solves the issue of transport connectivity, and on the other hand, it will not require creating a product completely from scratch,” Mr. Slyusar said in an interview with TASS on the sidelines of SPIEF-2023.
According to him, the possibility of remotorizing the Il-96 aircraft and creating its version with two engines is also being discussed. “We continue negotiations with airlines. So far, we cannot boast of specific contracts, but work in this direction is underway,” the UAC Director General specified.
In addition, the possibility of a “deep modernization” of the Tu-214 aircraft and the creation of its shortened version with an increased flight range is being considered. “So far no decision has been made on it. But we are working on it, forming proposals. We hope that we will be able to get support here, to expand this process,” added Yury Slyusar.
Russia has its own SSJ short haul aircraft. From 2024, the production of the MS-21 medium-range aircraft is expected. Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov predicted the creation of a Russian long-range aircraft no earlier than 2028.
