Mongolia will expand cooperation with the United States in the extraction of rare earth elements

During an official visit to Washington, Prime Minister of Mongolia Luvsannamsrein Oyun-Erdene said that Mongolia will expand cooperation with the United States in the extraction of rare earth elements (REE). As Mr. Oyuun-Erdene noted in an exclusive interview Reuters after meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, they “discussed potential collaboration in the mining of rare earths, critical minerals including copper.”
Mongolia has vast reserves of REE and copper, which are necessary for the production of high-tech equipment, including military equipment. The prime minister said cooperation with the US, which he called an “important strategic third neighbor,” is already underway and will now be further expanded under a memorandum of understanding signed in June by Mongolia’s Ministry of Mines and Heavy Industry and the US State Department.
Mongolia, he said, also hopes to maintain good relations with neighboring China, but he warned that countries like Mongolia, which is hemmed in on both sides by China and Russia, could suffer if superpower rivalry gets out of hand.
“I fear that the new Cold War will be very different and more complex than the first Cold War,” he said, pointing to rapid technological change and the existence of global problems such as climate change. The prime minister urged major powers to “be more responsible” in order to avoid “dramatic negative consequences for many countries around the world, especially in the international economy.”
