Mondrian and Picasso paintings stolen in 2012 returned to Athens gallery

Paintings by Pablo Picasso “Head of a Woman” and Piet Mondrian’s “Windmill”, stolen in 2012, returned to the National Art Gallery of Athens, the Greek portal reported Lykavitos. Paintings were found in 2021 in a cache in a gorge near the Greek city of Keratea.
“Head of a Woman” was painted in 1939, Pablo Picasso donated it to the gallery in 1949. The Windmill was written in 1905. The painting was purchased from the Greek collector Alexandros Pappas in 1963 and donated to the gallery.
Theft happened in January 2012. In addition to the works of Picasso and Mondrian, a drawing on paper on gospel themes, which was made by Guglielmo Caccia, was stolen. The police did not report his whereabouts. The thief claimed that he did it for the love of art.
