Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation: production at Sakhalin-1 was stopped under a far-fetched pretext

The head of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Shulginov, hopes that production at the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project will quickly recover. He believes that the stop occurred “under a far-fetched pretext.” According to the minister, specialists are working to restore production at the enterprise.

“As for Sakhalin-1, the story is already more complicated, since production was stopped, from our point of view, under a far-fetched pretext. Now we are waiting for a decision,” said Mr. Shulginov on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) (quoted from TASS).

“We are working with the operator and consortium members to restore production as quickly as possible. I think things should clear up soon,” he added.

Recently became knownthat ExxonMobil, which owns 30% of Sakhalin-1, has notified Russia that it will sue it if the company is not allowed to withdraw from the project. In July, the Russian authorities said that after the recall of ExxonMobil specialists, oil production at Sakhalin-1 decreased by 22 times – from 220 thousand to 10 thousand barrels per day (b / d). In June, according to Kommersant’s data, production did not exceed 6,000 barrels per day, that is, the project was almost stopped. The American company explained the decline in production by “recent events that prevent or delay the company’s fulfillment of its obligations under the agreements.”
