Minister Pap Ndiaye announces “an exceptional tenure competition” for contract workers to make up for the shortage of teachers

The Minister of Education, Pap Ndiaye, presented Friday August 26 his first return to school, faced with the challenges of putting as promised “a teacher in front of each class” and to restore the attractiveness of the profession.

The profession is experiencing an unprecedented attractiveness crisis, with more than 4,000 unfilled positions this year after teacher competitions in the country (out of 27,300 open positions in the public and private sectors). This shortage prompted the government to recruit a large number of contract workers in June to ensure the start of the school year during controversial “job dating”, interviews organized in several academies.
Draw among the non-receipts in the competition
“The vast majority of our contract teachers were already teaching last year, or even previous years. It can be estimated that 80 to 90% of contract teachers already have teaching experience”, assured Mr. Ndiaye. National education is using some 3,000 contract workers this year, out of about 870,000 teachers.
Another pool to make up for the lack of teachers, the additional lists of teacher competitions: candidates who took the competition in the spring of 2022 and were not received.
The Ministry “identifies the needs following the defections and resignations of the laureates received [au printemps 2022] on the main lists », said Pap Ndiaye. To replace these resigners, the rue de Grenelle draws from these additional lists. This is, to date, 260 people.
Split kindergarten classes in REP
The Minister also announced that the classes of large kindergarten section will be split into REP “at the start of the school year in September 2024”. “Today, 75% of classes are”, underlined Pap Ndiaye. Outside the priority education networks, “almost all of the large section classes, CP and CE1” is capped at twenty-four students, recalled the minister.
