Meta refuses to build new data centers in Denmark

Meta Corporation (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) refused to build two new data processing centers (DPC) in Denmark. The company canceled a contract signed with a Danish contractor in August for 2.4 billion crowns ($342 million), reports Bloomberg.

The Danish company Per Aarsleff, which was supposed to expand the existing data center in Odense for Meta, received a notice to terminate the contract on December 13th. Mark Zuckerberg’s corporation itself confirmed the rejection of plans to build new data centers in the country only today, December 15.

Meta already has two data centers in Odense and a third is under construction. The company planned to build two more buildings to store its servers in the city. Their construction has begun, the foundation has already been poured, sewerage, cables have been laid, a canteen and parking for a thousand cars have appeared. However, Meta does not intend to complete the construction. As company spokesman Peter Münster explained, Meta is reviewing its own development plans and wants to make sure that it builds only “next generation” data centers that can serve artificial intelligence models.

This is not the first time that Meta has refused to build new data centers this year. In July, the company curtailed a project in the Netherlands after facing opposition from local authorities and environmentalists.

Last month Meta announced about the largest layoff in its history. The company will lay off about 11 thousand employees, that is, about 13% of its staff.
