Meta may shut down Facebook News service in the US

Meta (recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and banned) may disable Facebook News in the US if local authorities approve a bill to protect the interests of journalism, writes The Wall Street Journal. If passed, the law would allow publishers to negotiate collectively with companies such as Meta and Google on how much to pay for the use of journalistic material.
“If Congress passes an ill-conceived journalism bill under national security legislation, we will be forced to consider removing news entirely from our platform, rather than submit to government negotiations that unfairly ignore any value we provide to news outlets through increased traffic and subscriptions.” Meta said on Twitter. “The Competition and Journalism Protection Bill misses one obvious fact: publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform because it’s beneficial to them, and for no other reason. No company should be forced to pay for content that users don’t want to see and that doesn’t generate any revenue. In simple terms: the government is creating a kind of cartel that forces one private company to sponsor other private companies, which will be a terrible precedent for all American business.”
The US authorities are not the first in the world to introduce the practice of collective protection of the interests of publishers, forcing tech giants to pay equally for news content to all publishers instead of making deals with them individually. Australia was the first to pass such a law last year. Canada and New Zealand are set to follow suit. Meta threatened to shut down its Facebook news service in all of these countries. The company deactivated Facebook News in Australia for a while, but shortly after the passage of a local media protection law, the service was back up and running.
