The U.S. may face a shortage of a number of medical supplies after a Pfizer pharmaceutical plant was destroyed by a tornado in North Carolina. informs The Epoch Times, citing interviewed experts.
Pfizer’s Rocky Mount plant sustained significant damage on July 20, with no serious injuries reported among workers, and the company continues to assess the extent of the damage. The facility produced 25% of all sterile Pfizer injectables used in US hospitals.
According to the melon edition, the plant produced drugs for anesthesia, drugs for the treatment of infections, as well as drugs that are used in surgical operations.
“To date, there has already been a shortage of 300 drugs, and many of them are sterile injectable drugs, like those produced at this plant. So we’re already in a drug shortage crisis, and that’s [разрушение завода]of course, has every chance of exacerbating the situation,” said ASHP (American Society of Health System Pharmacists) Vice President Tom Kraus.
Erin Fox, senior pharmaceutical director at Utah Health University, said the tornado is likely to lead to long-term shortages of some medicines until Pfizer can make compensatory production at other plants, or until the company rebuilds the destroyed facility.
