Fast food chain McDonald’s has announced an increase in tariffs for franchise owners in the United States. This is the first increase in 30 years, the tariff will be raised from 4% to 5%. About 95% of McDonald’s nearly 13,400 U.S. restaurants are now operated under franchise agreements, all of which pay rent, monthly royalties and other deductions. Franchised restaurants in the US accounted for about 30% of McDonald’s total revenue in 2022. The company’s shares on the New York Stock Exchange reacted to news of the tariff increase with a slight increase of about 0.5%. McDonald’s shares are up 3% year to date. The company’s capitalization is approaching $200 billion.
