Mars in the test mode packed chocolates in paper to combat plastic waste

Mars in the UK started testing more sustainable paper packaging for their chocolate bars. Starting today, May 29th, Mars bars in paper, not plastic packaging will appear in 500 Tesco supermarkets in the UK.
So far, this has been done in test mode for a limited time: the company wants to study how different types of packaging will perform in everyday life. Regular Mars Bar packaging, like some other types of packaging, is made from non-recyclable plastic. The company said it is exploring “different types of packaging alternatives” for its candies so that the packaging can be recycled or reused while still ensuring the contents are safe and secure. Mars is going to, among other things, collect customer feedback and, based on the results of testing, decide which packaging to use.
Last year, British company Quality Street, owned by Nestle, announced that it would wrap its candy in recycled paper instead of plastic. In 2020, the UK banned the use of plastic straws.
