Theater bookshelf replenished with new editions
The Vakhtangov Theater continues to build its library: theory, research, the practice of masters and schools – everything goes into the treasury of the legendary theater with a hundred-year history, which is addressed not only to contemporaries, but also to descendants. The other day, the Vakhtangov bookshelf was replenished with three new editions. Among them is the book of our theatrical reviewer Marina Raikina “End your Vakhtangov humor.” She, along with others, was presented in the art cafe of the theater house on the Arbat.
– “End your Vakhtangov humor,” Ruben Simonov once began his rehearsals with these words out of habit, the author says about his book. – Yes, and the subtitle does not belong to me, but to Evgeny Vakhtangov himself: “To laugh. Not to cry.” That was the name of the program that the young Vakhtangov once did, but the intonation of what was said by one of the first students and successors of Vakhtangov’s work spoke of the opposite. The fact that humor has always been and remains in value here. That he is something more and more important than just a joke or an anecdote, so revered in the acting world.
And Vakhtangov’s humor is not only a legend of history, but also a concept and a view of the world, even if this world is tragic. History has proven this: in the most difficult and dashing years, humor, stage or behind the scenes, was a lifeline.
The journalist Valery Yakov, who presented Raikina’s book, stressed that the expression “humor as salvation” is as relevant today as ever. “I started reading, I thought to scroll through the chapters, since I know a lot, but I could not tear myself away. Firstly, there are many discoveries, and secondly, the book has an expanding meaning in the media space. After all, what you read, you can immediately see through the qar codes that complete most of the chapters. They contain fragments from performances, skits, the backstage life of the theater.
The book contains a colossal history of the Vakhtangov Theater from the perspective of irony and humor. The school where everything begins and where their kings of reprises and skits grow. Literary experiments of Vakhtangovites of different generations – epigrams, impromptu, playful anniversary congratulations. Artistic experiments – in friendly cartoons and not only on each other, but also on the characters. The texts of theatrical skits and individual numbers – much is published for the first time, and not only from the past, but also, and, importantly, the present, representing the ironic view of the new generation of Vakhtangov. Here are the riddles of the legendary Chinese princess Turandot, which have changed over time, trying to reflect this very time. Finally, the reverse side of humor is in the tears, sorrows and life epilogues of the kings of humor invisible to the world.
Among the new publications of the Vakhtangov Theater, two more interesting studies have also been published – “The Vakhtangovites: Dramaturgy of the Beginning” by Ella Mikhaleva about the first decade of the theater without a Teacher. And “Moscow addresses of Evgeny Vakhtangov. A Guide to the Waves of History and Memory” by Viktor Borzenko, in which for the first time an attempt was made to collect together addresses related to the life and work of Yevgeny Bagrationovich.
