The actress starred in a challenging biopic
The fashion for historical series seems to have changed. Instead of the events of the Catherine era, the authors suddenly greedily seized on the characters and surroundings of relatively recent origin. Following the film adaptation of the lives of Vertinsky and Chaliapin, the biography of Faina Ranevskaya also turned into a script. And it was a bold choice.
Considerable courage was required from the performer of the main role. She had to play not only a historical character, but also, to some extent, the heroine of folklore, as well as a symbol of acting talent and a woman with an exemplary sense of humor.
The person of Faina Ranevskaya has appeared in films and TV shows before. In “The Star of the Epoch” directed by Yuri Kara, the legendary actress was played by Tatyana Vasilyeva. In Stanislav Govorukhin’s film Bless the Woman, Ranevskaya was the prototype for the image of actress Ekaterina Kunina, and this role went to Inna Churikova. Julia Rutberg reincarnated as Faina Georgievna in the TV series Orlova and Alexandrov, and Elena Bondareva-Repina played Ranevskaya in a short episode of the film Anna German. All these projects received considerable resonance in their time, but Ranevskaya is not at all the main character in them.
A full-fledged biopic – and the series “Ranevskaya” shows most of the life of an actress – suggests a different scope, and the main role in terms of casting is of key importance. It is known that at the initial stage, they planned to select four actresses for the role of Ranevskaya, who would play Faina Georgievna in different years of her life.
Marietta Tsigal-Polishchuk (daughter of Lyubov Polishchuk and great-granddaughter of the poetess Marietta Shaginyan) was supposed to play Ranevskaya in her youth, which probably made the task of the actress easier, because very little is known about young Faina and there are no photographs of that time left. However, during pre-production, Marietta remained the only contender, and it was understood that she would need to play Ranevskaya throughout her life.
Previously, the actress has already had to transform into legendary women. In the TV series “Wings of the Empire” Tsigal-Polishchuk plays Anna Akhmatova, and in “Mysterious Passion” – Zoya Boguslavskaya. But this time she had to take on, perhaps, the main responsibility for the image beloved by millions.
As expected, responses to the series are not always teeming with compliments. Couch critics have already found a lot of historical deviations and, of course, do not want to listen to the arguments of the creators of the project that the series should not be regarded as a documentary biography. With the latter, everything is not easy at all. There are very few reliable sources from which one could learn about the life of the actress; Faina Georgievna herself did not leave memoirs, so her person is surrounded by myths and conjectures. Probably, any film about Ranevskaya is largely a fantasy on the topic, and the very personality of the actress turns into a fictional character under certain circumstances.
However, even those who do not agree with this approach still note that Marietta Tsigal-Polishchuk became the main engine of the project and it is very interesting to look at her in the image of Ranevskaya. The authors avoided the temptation to turn the series into a set of funny tales and anecdotes and rather talk about a brilliant actress whose life was spent in a country where genius is viewed with great suspicion.
From time to time, a historical context appears in the frame, but pogroms, war, repressions, censorship are of much less interest to the authors than the reproduction of acting in the form in which it was presented in the last century. The serial Ranevskaya goes a long way from a young girl from Taganrog in love with the theater to a great actress who ends her life all alone. This path is largely built from the usual clichés of projects of this format. Faded minor characters, scenery, sometimes reminiscent of a local history museum, and the inevitable triumph of melodrama. Fortunately, there is a good main character, which is already a lot.
