Majority of Twitter users voted for Musk to step down as CEO

The vote, which was launched on December 18 by American businessman Elon Musk on whether he should continue to head Twitter, which he bought in the fall, has ended. Most of the users who participated in it spoke out against this.

To Musk’s question “Should I step down as head of Twitter?” 57.5% answered in the affirmative, 42.5% – in the negative. In describing the vote, the businessman promised to “stick to” the results of the vote. In total, over 17.5 million people took part in the survey.

How writes The Washington Post, Musk’s “referendum” may serve as a justification for the decision already made: the entrepreneur already did this when he asked Twitter users in the fall of 2021 whether he should sell 10% of Tesla shares, although the sale was already planned. The publication also draws attention to investor dissatisfaction with the fact that Musk pays too much attention to Twitter, which could harm SpaceX, which he leads, and especially Tesla, whose papers fell by 15% last week. Finally, the billionaire himself, after buying the company, made it clear that he was not going to manage companies in the long term.

Musk officially became the owner of Twitter on October 27, in a deal valued at $44 billion. In his account, Musk explained the purchase of the social network with a desire to create a platform “where a wide range of beliefs can be discussed in a healthy environment without resorting to violence.” On November 22, the entrepreneur announced that the number of users of the social network reached a record number of 259.4 million people.

The New York Times reported earlier that Twitter suspended the accounts of several American journalists, including correspondents from CNN, The Washington Post, The Intercept and Mashable, and several independent journalists. According to the businessman, the owners of the blocked accounts published his location in real time, “actually giving the coordinates for the murder, which is an obvious violation of the rules” of the social network. After the big scandal that arose, Musk restored the accounts of journalists, and he did it again after a user vote.
