One of the world’s largest sea freight carriers is the Danish company AP Moller-Maersk. presented the first large ship to run on biofuel. This is a 350-meter container ship designed to transport 16.6 thousand 20-foot (about 6 m) containers.

The container ship was named Ane Maersk in honor of Ane Maersk McKinney Uggla, the granddaughter of the company’s founder and head of the AP Moller Foundation. The ceremony took place at the shipyard of the South Korean company HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in the city of Ulsan. Operation of the container ship will begin in February. It will operate on different routes between Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

The vessel has two engines – one is a regular diesel engine, the other runs on green methanol. Maersk says that when running on this fuel, the ship emits 100 tons of carbon dioxide less per day than with conventional diesel. Maersk demonstrated testing of this vessel in September. By 2027, the company should already have 25 vessels of this kind.
