Lufthansa to cancel 1,200 flights on Friday due to strikes

German airline Lufthansa will cancel on Friday, February 17, at least 1,200 flights at hub airports in Frankfurt am Main and Munich due to a one-day strike by ground personnel, transmits Bloomberg.

The strike was organized by the united trade union of workers in the service sector of Germany Ver.di. According to the organization’s spokesperson Christine Behle, the next round of negotiations between the airline’s management and the union will take place on February 22. All previous negotiations have not led to any changes, Belé stressed.

This is not the first time the airline has been forced to cancel flights due to a strike. So, in July 2022 Lufthansa canceled over 1000 flights. Because of this, about 130,000 passengers were unable to fly from airports – their flights were rescheduled for other days.

Through the strikes, Ver.di hopes to make progress in negotiations with the company to improve working conditions and raise wages. According to Behle, employees face a heavy workload due to staff shortages and high inflation. The strikers are demanding a 9.5% increase in wages, or at least 350 euros per month.
