Lithuanian bank serving transit to Kaliningrad stopped operations in rubles

The Lithuanian commercial Siauliai Bank, through which the payment for Kaliningrad transit passed, stopped accepting payments in rubles. This was announced by the representative of the Association of Lithuanian Banks Valeria Kiguolene on the air of the radio station LRT, transmits TASS.
According to her, from today the bank stops all transactions with payments in rubles, and from September 1, any transactions with the Russian side in all currencies will be stopped. Everyone was notified about the new order in a timely manner, she stressed.
The Association of Banks announced last week that the Lithuanian authorities should approve state guarantees for payments for Kaliningrad transit in order to avoid suspicions of violating EU sanctions against Russia. At the same time, the European Commission assured that the activities of commercial banks and transactions for transit to Kaliningrad do not violate the sanctions regime. According to the representative of the European Commission, Ariana Podesta, the refusal of Šiauliai Bank to accept payments is a decision of a particular bank, which was made on the basis of its own ideas about the risks, and not a requirement for EU sanctions.
Earlier, the governor of the Kaliningrad region, Anton Alikhanov, reported that Lithuania had suspended all payments by Russian operators only to this bank, so now payment for transit will become impossible – Lithuania will stop passing transport, as a result of which transit to the region may stop on September 1.
