‘Law & Order’ actor Richard Belzer dies

Richard Belzer, the comedian and actor best known for playing Detective John Munch on a number of NBC crime dramas including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, has died, his ex-manager has said. He was 78 years old.
According to Eric Gardner, his former manager, Belzer “passed away peacefully” early Sunday morning local time at his home in France.
Writer Bill Sheft, a longtime friend of the actor, told The Hollywood Reporter that Belzer has “a lot of health issues.”
Belzer rose to fame for his role as Detective Munch, first appearing on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1999 in four episodes of Law & Order.
Belzer then became a series regular, appearing in 326 episodes between 1999 and 2016. Although his character retired in 2013, he has been brought back to the series.
Like Belzer himself, Detective Munch had a conspiracy mind, a Jewish background, and a dry sense of humor. His portrayal of a skinny, witty bespectacled investigator eventually became one of the most recognizable cops in the history of crime television shows.
