Laurent Wauquiez is already preparing for the 2027 presidential election

MP at 29, government spokesman at 32, vice-president of the UMP at 37… For a long time, Laurent Wauquiez was a man in a hurry on the right. Like a steamroller, which chained the functions and climbed the steps, to rush at full speed towards the supreme function, the Elysée, of which he has dreamed for more than fifteen years.
But this image of uninhibited ambition, even bad boy, ready to do anything to quench his thirst for power, had served him. Aware of this weak point, the enarque had therefore decided to change strategy. No more question of rushing headlong, even if it means making enemies in your own camp. Since his resignation from the head of the Les Républicains (LR) party in 2019, after the disastrous score (8.5%) of his formation in the European elections, the marathon runner had therefore withdrawn to his stronghold, to the regional council of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, which he has chaired since 2015, meticulously taking care not to reveal his national ambitions.
But this strategic step backwards only lasted three years. After voluntarily letting his turn for the 2022 presidential election pass, trying to wrap himself in the clothes of the unifier – he said he did not want “add division to division” within his political family – Laurent Wauquiez, now 47, felt that the time had come to once again display his Elysian ambitions. Only a few months after the debacle of the president of the Ile-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse, the ex-boss of LR affirmed his desire to compete during the “great meeting of 2027”.
Resuscitator
“My conviction is that we have a mission: to prepare the post-Macron today”he said, on August 28, in front of around 200 people, during his traditional ascent of Mont Mézenc, on his lands in Haute-Loire. “It is an immense task to which I want to devote myself entirely”, he added. Before exposing the method he has tried to cultivate in recent years, in order to appear less divisive: ” take height “, ” to question ourselves “, “Rekindle the thread of trust that has been lost”… In short, he poses as a unifier. Or rather as a resuscitator, to restore hope of conquest to the right, which has lost national power for more than ten years now.
But, unlike Jacques Chirac or Nicolas Sarkozy, who had got their hands on their training before entering the Elysée, Laurent Wauquiez, he does not consider it necessary to go through the party box. He announced on July 17 that he would not be a candidate for the presidency of LR, but that he intended to build a ” alternative “ for “going beyond device issues”. In this long-distance race, Mr. Wauquiez is betting on the victory of Eric Ciotti, candidate for election as party leader, which will be held in December. The deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes having already said that in the event of victory, he wanted “accompany Laurent Wauquiez to the Elysée”.
