The Beethoven Hall of the Bolshoi Theater hosted the Golden Mask award ceremony in the nomination For Contribution to the Development of Theatrical Art. The Secretariat of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia (STD) announced the winners of the award in December 2021. For the first time since 2020, the event was held in the presence of a full auditorium, although the format of the ceremony has changed several times since the beginning of the pandemic.

“Its remarkable feature is that this award is the recognition of your colleagues… Each of you, I’m talking about the laureates, has done a lot for the development of our theatre. I want you to understand that each of you is a master in your field. Great master. Thank you all,” said the head of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia, Alexander Kalyagin (quote from RIA Novosti). He also added that in the current conditions it is important “to maintain faith in ourselves, faith in our work, faith in our theater.”

Awards for contribution to theatrical art were received by the chief artist of the Russian Academic Youth Theater Stanislav Benediktov, actor of the Maly Theater of Russia Vasily Bochkarev, actress Alla Demidova, ballerina and teacher-repetiteur of the Musical Theater Margarita Drozdova, scientist-bibliographer Vyacheslav Nechaev, stage speech teacher of the Studio School Moscow Art Theater, Professor Anna Petrova, director Adolf Shapiro, artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theater Valery Fokin, artistic director of the St. Petersburg Children’s Musical Theater “Through the Looking Glass” Alexander Petrov, actor of the Oryol Drama Theater. The Golden Mask Award was established in 1993 as a professional award for the best works of the season in all types of theatrical art (drama, opera, ballet, modern dance, operetta, musical, puppet theater). The winners of the award are determined at the annual festival of nominee performances. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony was held online for the first time in history. The next season, the event was held in accordance with sanitary and epidemiological regulations, so the auditorium was only half full. However, on April 20, 2022, the ceremony went online again, and the award winners connected to the broadcast via Skype, zoom and other video channels from different locations.
