Laima Vaikule was suspected of tax evasion in Russia

Latvian singer Laima Vaikule may have been hiding her income from concert activities in Russia in order to evade taxes. Such an assumption expressed head of the Law Enforcement Center in Moscow and the Moscow Region Alexander Khaminsky.
He explained that foreign performers enter the country to participate in paid concerts on the basis of a single or multiple work visa.
“But it often happens that artists say that they did not come to work, but for a birthday party with friends or acquaintances. Like, we were asked to sing, and we didn’t get anything for it, ”the social activist said.
A citizen of the European Union Vaikule is obliged each time to issue a work visa indicating the purpose of the trip, and to provide the consuls of the Russian Foreign Ministry with a performance contract indicating the exact amount of remuneration.
Khaminsky in 2018 turned to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs with a request to initiate an audit of Vaikule’s income in Russia. After that, the singer significantly reduced her concert activity in the country and became quite “toxic” in Russia.
“From that moment in Russia, in principle, she did not participate in those concerts that took place in the legal field,” the social activist emphasized.
