However, according to the newspaper, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) opposes Russian Railways entering the wholesale energy market to buy electricity without intermediaries, which would allow the company to save up to 5 billion rubles. annually.
The department believes that the exit Russian Railways into the wholesale market will lead to a violation of the law on the electric power industry, which prohibits the combination of activities for the transmission and purchase and sale of electricity.
“The company is a territorial grid organization that provides electricity transmission services in more than 40 regions,” the FAS noted. According to the Russian Railways report, the monopoly’s income from energy transmission in 2021 amounted to 13.8 billion rubles. The company declined to comment.
This is not the first time Russian Railways to enter the wholesale energy market, the company has been undertaking them since 2019. Now such large consumers as “Rusal“, NLMK“Severstal”, which helps them save on purchases. Russian Railways is one of the largest consumers of electricity in Russia.
According to the newspaper, in 2021 the company accounted for about 4.6% of all electricity consumed in Russia. Also last year, it increased consumption by almost 5% to 51.46 billion kWh, and its costs increased by 8.8% compared to last year, reaching 188.9 billion rubles.
