Swedish manufacturer of telecom equipment Ericsson is going to close the representative office in Russia by the end of the year and lay off all employees. This includes employees who provide technical support on the networks of telecom operators, writes Kommersant, citing sources in the telecommunications market.

On August 22, the company notified the Russian division of the decision to close the representative office and lay off all employees until the end of 2022. Ericsson confirmed that the company will gradually phase out activities in Russia in the coming months. At the same time, the manufacturer promised “financial and social” support to employees.

At the same time, a top manager of a major equipment manufacturer believes that Ericsson can separate the technical support service into an independent legal entity. In this case, management will become its founder. A possible scenario confirmed the source in one of the operators. According to one of the interlocutors, the operators had enough time to cope with the equipment without technical support from Ericsson. It is clarified that problems can only arise due to the inability to obtain spare parts from the company under warranty.

According to Kommersant, Ericsson’s share in the Russian market is about 20%. The company cooperated with the largest telecom operators in Russia. Yes, March 2020. MTS updated its network to the 5G standard based on Ericsson equipment, investing 10 billion rubles.

Tele2 also agreed in May 2021 to purchase 50,000 base stations from the company to develop the network in 27 regions of the Russian Federation. MTS and Tele2 declined to comment. MegaFon said that the amount of equipment from Ericsson on the operator’s network is minimal. The ministry declined to comment.

After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine due to sanctions, the largest telecommunications companies announced their withdrawal from the Russian market and the termination of equipment supplies to the country. Among them were Nokia and Ericsson. Nokia told the newspaper that it “will make efforts to continue supporting equipment that runs on networks.” At the same time, work in Russia still continues Huawei. The company did not respond to a request from the publication.
