Painting by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt “Lady with a fan” sold at the auction house Sotheby’s in London for $108.7 million, making it the most expensive piece of art ever sold in Europe.

Mr. Klimt painted the portrait in 1917-1918. The description of the painting on the Sothbey’s website says that “Lady with a Fan” is one of the last completed works of the artist, which he completed shortly before his death from pneumonia.

The last record holder for the sale price at an auction in Europe among works of art was the bronze statue of the Walking Man I, made by the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. She went under the hammer for $104.3 million in 2010.
