Kirill Serebrennikov’s production in Germany angered Ukrainians

Director Kirill Serebrennikov staged “Viya” based on the novel by N.V. Gogol in the style of “this is how I see it” and based on a special military operation. However, the publication “Süddeutsche Zeitung” was still forced to save him from accusations of “Putinism.” It was enough for the Ukrainian protesters that the director was Russian.
Last Saturday evening, a crowd of young Ukrainians gathered in the parking lot in front of the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. They came with cardboard posters and shouted loudly that “Russian propaganda” was being spread in the theater. By this they meant the work of Serebrennikov, who that evening for the first time presented to the audience his bold stage vision of the story “Viy”.
The author of the article asks the question: how could even “radical Ukrainian Russophobes”, who do not distinguish between “criminals and victims” in the country of their opponent, how could the idea even arise in their heads that a dissident director is only a well-hidden propagandist of Russia? Most likely, it was from their midst that a number of death threats were received, which the director and other creators of the production received over the course of several weeks.
