Russian director and playwright Kirill Serebrennikov will shoot a mini-series – it will be an adaptation of the gothic novel by the French writer Gaston Leroux “The Phantom of the Opera”. Portal announced this Variety.
The series will have six episodes. It will be entirely in English. Kirill Serebrennikov describes it as an erotic, psychological thriller that will tell “a story about the hidden side of opera”.
The series will be produced by the French film studio Path and the independent European film studio Hype Studios. The latter collaborated with Kirill Serebrennikov while working on the films “Summer”, “Petrovs in the Flu”, “Tchaikovsky’s Wife”. The release date of the series is still unknown.
The main character will not be the Phantom of the Opera, but the vocalist Christina. The team working on the project says that this story will also be about emancipation. “Torn between disgust and attraction to the ghost, Christina will have to take control of her own destiny as a woman and an artist,” said the project team. “Our story will go beyond the text of Gaston Leroux, written over a century ago, and become the story of the intimate world of opera,” said Kirill Serebrennikov.
This summer, Kirill Serebrennikov collaborated with the Paris Opera House – his debut production of Lohengrin by Richard Wagner will be released in September.
The Phantom of the Opera series is the third project of Kirill Serebrennikov abroad. Recently he finished working on the film “Limonov, a ballad about Eddie.” Now the director is also working on a project for a film about Josef Mengele “Disappearance”.
The adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is the director’s second television project. In 2002, commissioned by the Rossiya channel, he filmed the TV series The Killer’s Diary. A few years ago, the director spoke about plans to work on a multi-part project about the life of director Andrei Tarkovsky.
