State Duma Deputy Alexander Khinshtein stated that it is impossible to legally import LGBT literature from abroad for sale. Thus, the parliamentarian commented material Kommersant, where it was reported that publishing houses intend to print such books (in Russian) in countries neighboring Russia.
“Now they (publishers.—“b”) decided to publish such “literature” abroad. This is their right. That’s just to introduce this product into the territory of Russia – they will not be able to; unless they establish illegal LGBT traffic,” Mr. Khinshtein wrote in Telegram channel.
The parliamentarian warned that in the latter case, the organizers of the import to the Russian Federation would face criminal punishment.
The law banning the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations and preferences was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 5, 2022. With the entry into force of the law, bookstores have removed some of the literature on LGBT topics from their assortment.
January 10, one of the authors of the law Alexander Khinshtein informed that LGBT propaganda cases were filed against Popcorn Books. The parliamentarian called the publishing house “one of the flagships for the promotion of LGBT literature in Russia.”
