On the New Stage of the Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov, a cinema was set up for exactly one evening for the sake of a film show and the subsequent awarding of the laureates of the short film competition “Arrival of the Seagull”.
It was organized as part of the events on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Moscow Art Theater, which is celebrated throughout 2023. The hosts of the ceremony were the very young ladies Arina and Alisa from the Generation Plumage creative development studio. They uttered part of the monologue of the heroine of Chekhov’s “The Seagull” Nina Zarechnaya “People, lions, eagles and partridges” and presented the shortlisted films.
The Seagull Arrives competition was born to support young filmmakers, and at the same time to explore the interaction between theater and cinema. “It is necessary that theater and cinema be friends, exist together, so that young filmmakers hear and see each other, so that they recognize our wonderful artists. We must help each other. This is the purpose of our award. We hope that the competition will become an annual event, and we are already thinking about what it will be like next year. Naturally, we will come up with a new topic for the contestants, ”said Konstantin Khabensky, removing some of the questions that the uninitiated had.
Students and graduates of VGIK, Film and Television School “Industriya”, Moscow Film School, Moscow School of New Cinema took part in the competition. Each of them filmed a work related to the seagull as a symbol of the Art Theater, which adorns its curtain. The timing should not exceed 125 seconds.
“Cinema began with the arrival of a train, the Art Theater with the arrival of a seagull. What is this seagull? Where did she fly from and where did she go? – this is how, according to Khabensky, the theme was formulated. And the rest – complete freedom, do whatever your heart desires.
Selected the best expert council, which included actress and producer Anna Mikhalkova, film critics Boris Berman and Ildar Zhandarev, directors Nikolai Lebedev, Dmitry Meskhiev, Alexei Nuzhny, Alexei Sidorov, Konstantin Bogomolov. Then the winners were determined by the jury: Konstantin Khabensky, actors of the Moscow Art Theater – Stanislav Lyubshin, Mikhail Porechenkov, Igor Vernik, Daria Moroz, Irina Pegova, Stanislav Duzhnikov, Viktor Khorinyak. Karen Shakhnazarov became an honorary member of the jury, and this is something like the know-how of the Moscow Art Theater.
The Grand Prix for the best film was awarded to 125 seconds entitled “The Seagull is Back” by Irina Prokhorova from the Industry School of Film and Television. She is also an actress of the Orenburg Theater. M. Gorky with a luxurious repertoire. Irina thanked her stage colleagues for giving up her day off for filming, and the artistic director for allowing all this to happen. She did not want to submit her short film to the competition. Suddenly it seemed that not everything worked out. But everything was resolved in the best possible way, and now Irina will have to shoot a short film according to the script “The Animal” by Vl.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, which was kept in the Moscow Art Theater Museum. They say that he was intended for one of the Hollywood studios, but was rejected. And now it has been pulled from the archives, and a popular multimedia platform has taken it upon itself to provide its film production. The winner will be asked to recruit a team of Moscow Art Theater actors, and the filming process itself, according to Khabensky, will take place under the strict guidance of the Moscow Art Theater. Such an unusual award went to the winner.
In the nomination “The Birth of a Seagull” for the best idea, the film “My Love!” Kristina Shirinova, who, in her response, thanked the Moscow Art Theater for always opening its doors to students and giving them the opportunity to watch performances. In the category “La Chaika” the leader was “La Mouette. Ou pas” by Elena Gracheva. The special prize of the video service, which participated in the organization of the award, was awarded to the film “I really liked you” by Elizaveta Votyakova. The Anniversary Seagull was awarded to The History of One Flight by Georgy Sokolovich, and the Classical Seagull was awarded to Diana Shapshai’s Premiere. The laureates were presented with clappers topped with a seagull. The symbol of the short film was the stump of the ruler – the idea of the chief artist of the Moscow Art Theater Nikolai Simonov. As Khabensky clearly explained, they took a ruler and shortened it, cutting off the extra 25 cm. But you can immediately feel what a short film is.
