In 2023, Kazakhstan doubled its supplies of oil and gas condensate bypassing Russian ports compared to a year earlier – to 3.73 million tons (1.91 million tons in 2022). Such data is provided by Reuters with reference to sources. In total, in 2023, according to the agency, Kazakhstan exported 70.5 million tons of oil and gas condensate versus 64.3 million tons a year earlier.

Kazakhstan is building alternative routes bypassing Russian ports, minimizing the risks of sanctions. However, the main channel for the export of Kazakhstani raw materials is still the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) with a share of 80%. The main alternative destinations for oil exports from Kazakhstan are the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, the Georgian port of Batumi, as well as the Druzhba pipeline, through which oil goes to the German refinery in Schwedt.

Over the past year, oil supplies from the port of Aktau to Azerbaijan increased to 1.468 million tons from 0.250 million tons a year earlier. Exports via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline increased to 1.392 million tons. The main suppliers of raw materials on this route are Tengizchevroil (72%), Total&Dunga (18%), Zhaikmunai (5%) and Buzachi oil (4%). The volume of exports along the Trans-Caspian route, according to the agency, amounted to 1.55 million tons.

Exports of raw materials from Kazakhstan to China in 2023 compared to a year earlier decreased by 4% – to 1.2 million tons. As Reuters reports, citing traders, foreign shareholders of large Caspian fields are not interested in supplying oil to China via the Atasu-Alashankou oil pipeline, since supplies via the Trans-Caspian route are more profitable.

Kazakhstan plans to double oil exports along the Trans-Caspian route to 3 million tons annually. This figure must be achieved within two years. To this end, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are discussing the transportation of raw materials via the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline.
