Recently, director Nikita Mikhalkov said that Russia should not nominate its films for the Oscars, which his brother Andrei Konchalovsky disagreed with, whose position, in turn, was supported by director Alexei Uchitel. Karen Shakhnazarov believes that there is really little point in this, especially since the award itself may disappear in the next few years.
In a conversation with “Arguments and Facts” Shakhnazarov noted that he was surprised by the discussion among filmmakers, since now no one invites Russian directors anywhere and it is unlikely that anyone else will be invited. According to the director, at the moment the system of awards and festivals is collapsing.
Shakhnazarov gave an example that this year he was selected for the Venice Film Festival, but he was refused, and this situation will continue for a long time. He believes that there is no point in offering Russian films, because it is better to refuse yourself than to wait until they refuse.
In addition, the director predicted that the “Oscar” itself will also “close” soon. According to Shakhnazarov’s forecast, the premium remains to exist for another couple of years, after which it will “deflate”, since everything is going down anyway. As Shakhnazarov noted, the world is changing, but changes always lead to better results. At the same time, he added that it is not yet known when this result will be, but one must hope and believe.
