INTERVIEW – This summer, Anne-Claire Coudray’s replacement journalist for the weekend editions on TF1 is breaking audience records. The opportunity for her to confide in this role that she has played since 2015.
The weekend is not always synonymous with rest. Since 2015, Audrey Crespo-Mara has been at the helm of weekend editions during the holiday period. Next weekend, Audrey Crespo-Mara will present her last editions of the summer season. But the rest is only short-lived. At the controls of “portrait of the week” in the Sunday magazine “Sept à Huit”, the interviewer starts her third season with an exclusive interview with Jacques and Thomas Dutronc. LE FIGARO. – How is your summer at the JT going?
Audrey CRESPO-MARA. – Very well. Like every summer, I found the weekend news team. We get along wonderfully! And also with the pleasure of working with this editorial staff of TF1, where I grew up, where I spent my first ten years as a journalist, as a reporter.
Beyond the unexpected, does the news remain dense in the summer?
Yes, we can see it clearly with these monster fires which ravaged the Gironde and affected many other regions in France. And then, of course, the Salman Rushdie affair, Afghanistan, a year after the Taliban’s return to power, the war in Ukraine, tensions in Taiwan… The news is no less dense during the summer.
Your news broke audience records this season. What does this reveal?
People always want to be informed, even during the holiday period. These records reward, above all, the work of the Editorial Board and all the teams who, tirelessly, feed these editions.
What is your organization for presenting five editions over the weekend?
From Thursday, we prepare what can be, starting with the most magazine part of the news. From Friday to Sunday, we are at TF1 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. From 8 a.m., we are working on the construction of the 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. news. With two highlights, the editorial conferences, one at 9:30 a.m., the other at 3:30 p.m. The rest of the time, the editors are in constant contact with the reporters. I focus on writing journals. And after each news, we debrief our editions with the teams.

What is the responsibility of the joker vis-à-vis the viewer?
It is exactly the same for jokers as for starters. Our responsibility is always to provide the best possible information, to go further, much further, in the analysis than the simple pushes we receive on our smartphones.
What memories do you have of your first time in this position?
I was reassured by the team and the editorial staff around me, since I knew them well. I was a little run-in since I had been presenting news and hosting talks for 8 years on LCI. But it is true that presenting the 20H of TF1 puts a very particular pressure. When for the first time, the credits you’ve heard throughout your childhood sound, and it’s you in the chair, it’s a strange feeling…
Can a joker add a personal touch to his newscasts?
Each, of course, has its own personality, but the room for maneuver is narrow. News takes precedence. It is true that I present the news at particular times: the weekend and during the holidays. A time when people need to pick up. So, part of our newspapers, more magazines, must also allow them to decompress. And then, we have to think, every summer, of new headings that correspond to the evolution of our society. Our mission is to inform people but also to make them escape.

Talk with Anne-Claire Coudrayholder that you are replacing?
Rarely, Anne-Claire goes on vacation when I arrive. We meet. But we have known each other for a long time since we grew up together in this editorial office, as young reporters, for ten years.
What is your assessment of your previous season of the “portrait of the week” in “Sept à Huit”?
We had a rich year with event portraits. I am thinking of that of Édouard Philippe who announced that he was not a presidential candidate and confided as rarely. To those by Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen during the Sunday between-two-rounds or even that of Diam’s of which it was thehe first and only TV interview in almost ten years.
Between the “Portrait of the Week” from Seven to Eight “and the TF1 news, is it complicated gymnastics to go from one to the other?
The JT is a liner that I lead with a whole editorial staff to provide global information. It is a heavy responsibility that we share. The “Portrait of the Week” of “Sept à Huit” is a one-on-one with a celebrity or an anonymous person. Beyond an intimate story, it’s about telling something universal. There is more subjectivity and more freedom there. Combining the two is very complementary and very pleasant.
What are your plans after this summer?
I am starting, with great pleasure, a 3rd season of the “Portrait of the Week” of “Sept à Huit”. The first of them will be devoted to the very rare Jacques Dutronc, who alongside his son Thomas, receives us in his Corsican refuge of Monticello. I’m very happy to be back with the “Sept à Huit” team, which is also of a very high standard. In short, everything is fine!
