“Joker 2”: all the latest details about the film

On August 4, Warner Bros. has published the first short teaser of the long-awaited film “Joker 2” on the Web. In honor of the official confirmation of the work on the film, we will tell you all the details about the film that the press has been able to get at the moment.

Who will return in the sequel?

The ending of the original 2019 film left only a few important characters with the opportunity to return, so in principle only the Joker himself and possibly a young Batman could be expected to reappear. The rest of the characters either died or weren’t important enough to carry over into the new movie.

In this regard, the return of Joaquin Phoenix to the role of the crazy clown looks like a matter of course. Moreover, for this role he received the award “Oscar” and “Golden Globe”. But according to insiders, the actor is still “very in-depth” in talks about his role in the film. Phoenix has always eschewed big franchises, especially those based on comics, in favor of self-contained projects with high artistic value. Actually, one of the reasons for his participation in the original “Joker” was the studio’s promise that this film would in no way be connected with the DC cinematic universe, which the same producers are developing in parallel. Perhaps the very fact of creating a sequel aroused new fears in him, so he did not immediately agree to the proposal, although the idea of ​​​​developing the ideas of the original is not at all alien to him:

“I can’t stop thinking about the Joker. We talked a lot with Todd about what else we could do with this character, what other interesting things could happen to him. To be honest, it was a dream role.”

The latest teaser lists his last name as the Joker’s lead actor, but that still doesn’t guarantee his appearance in the film. It is not uncommon for studios to announce projects too early and then cut out scenes with actors from films, replacing them with others, already at the stage of an advertising campaign.

As for the young Bruce Wayne, his participation is also still in question. Representatives of Dante Pereira-Olson, who played the boy in the original film, have not yet reacted to the announcement of the sequel. The same applies to Douglas Hodge, who played the cameo role of the butler Alfred.

A pleasant surprise for many was the news that the beautiful Lady Gaga will appear in Joker 2. She will play the role of the legendary clown partner Harley Quinn, who has gained particular popularity in recent years thanks to her own animated series and the film Birds of Prey. The arrival of Harley Quinn also means that Warner Bros. after all, they do not intend to make this film a part of the DC universe, because it already has its own performer of this role – Margot Robbie. The singer Lady Gaga has long established herself as a talented actress. Back in 2019, she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for A Star Is Born, as well as widespread critical acclaim for her performance in Ridley Scott’s The House of Gucci.

The film will be directed and written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver.

What will Joker 2 be about?

The full title of the new movie is Joker 2: Folie a Deux. The subtitle translates from French as “Madness for Two”. This expression not only additionally hints at the appearance of Harley Quinn in the sequel, but also refers to the music album of the popular Fall Out Boy band of the same name.

The reference to a musical group here is not just for beauty. According to the latest reports from sources inside the studio, Joker 2 will be a musical. The original film already had a bit of musical/dance elements, and the Joker himself liked to present himself as a TV character in different genres, so adding full-fledged musical numbers to the film can become very organic. Phillips himself has previously directed musical films, including the Oscar-winning A Star Is Born.

However, what part of the plot will be occupied by the songs, and who exactly will write them is not yet clear. The authors can be the same Lady Gaga or Fall Out Boy themselves.

As for the plot of the picture, there is much less information here. The original film was formally based on the Killer Thing comic, but in fact took almost nothing from its history. Therefore, it is not worth counting on the fact that the new picture will be based on any already known story of Harley and the Joker’s acquaintance. Todd Phillips said in a recent interview that the goal of this now film series is not at all to bring the hero from the comics to the screen:

“Our goal has never been to make Joaquin Phoenix into a comic book hero, only in a movie format. The goal was to make the universe of Joaquin Phoenix films out of comics. Other modern film comics seem too loud and pretentious to me.

Harley Quinn will obviously become the second central character along with her lover. This is indicated by the very name of the film and the fact that the creators showed it in the very first video for the film.

What was shown in the teaser?

The teaser consists of just a few practically still shots of silhouettes of the Joker and Harley. Fred Astaire’s 1935 song Cheek to Cheek plays in the background.

Not much information can be extracted from the teaser, although something new still becomes clear. For example, the choice of music makes it clear that the film will also use a retro style. In the original picture, it was used mainly through stylized TV shows. We also get another confirmation that the Joker and Harley will be equally important equal characters: in the teaser, they were given the same amount of time.

By the way, the fans accepted the new teaser with a bang. They did not note anything specific in it, because, again, it is rather short and not informative. But the very official confirmation of the work on the continuation of their favorite film delighted them.
