Johnson & Johnson buys medical implant maker Abiomed for $16.6 billion

American manufacturer of medical products, pharmaceuticals and sanitary products Johnson & Johnson (J&J) announced on the purchase of one of the world’s largest manufacturers of medical implants, the American company Abiomed. The deal is worth $16.6 billion, a record for J&J over the past six years and one of the largest acquisitions in the world this year.
Abiomed is a manufacturer of high-tech implants that fully or partially perform the functions of the most important internal organs – artificial heart devices, artificial lungs, endovascular implanted systems for circulatory support. In 2017, Forbes magazine included Abiomed in list 100 Most Innovative Fast-Growing Companies in the World, ranking it 23rd with a $5.4 billion valuation. Abiomed’s stock jumped 50% after the deal was announced.
