The American pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will stop producing talc-based baby powder from 2023 and stop selling the product on the global market, should from a company message.
“We have made a commercial decision to switch to a range of baby powders based entirely on cornstarch. As a result of this transition, Johnson’s talc-based baby powder will be phased out worldwide in 2023. It is clarified that the powder based on corn starch is already sold in many countries around the world.
At the same time, the company stressed its adherence to the position that talc-based powder is absolutely safe for health, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.
J&J has been receiving consumer lawsuits for several years now alleging that long-term use of talc-based products causes cancer because they contain asbestos. As a result, J&J announced in 2020 that it would stop selling talc powder in the US and Canada due to falling demand amid a series of lawsuits. In addition, in 2021, a Missouri federal court ordered the corporation to pay $4.7 billion to 22 women who filed a class action lawsuit. The company denied all charges, but was forced to create and then bankrupt the division of LTL Management, which is responsible for repaying multibillion-dollar health claims, thereby suspending the consideration of claims.
