Jazz musician Les McCann, best known for the song “Compared to What”, has died at the age of 88. His manager and producer Alan Abrahams told the AP. According to him, Mr. McCann died on December 29 in Los Angeles. A week earlier, he was hospitalized with pneumonia.
Les McCann is considered the founder of the soul jazz genre. His career began in the 1950s after winning a singing competition while serving in the US Navy, as well as on the popular variety show The Ed Sullivan Show. The musician released his first album in 1960.
Les McCann is best known for the song “Compared to What”, on which he collaborated with saxophonist Eddie Harris. The track was recorded live at the Monteo Jazz Festival in 1968 and combines jazz riffs with gospel vocals. The song condemns war, greed and injustice.
