Izvestia: the speed of mobile Internet in Russia fell by 7% due to equipment problems

The speed of mobile Internet in Russian cities has decreased on average to 18.3 Mbps. This is 7% less than in February 2022. At the same time, in Moscow, the speed of mobile connection increased by 32%, to 34.7 Mbps. In the future, the gap in the quality of communication between Moscow and the regions may grow. According to TelecomDaily, the decrease in speed in Russia is caused by a shortage of network equipment. Its deliveries to Russia were stopped in the spring of 2022 due to the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine. According to TelecomDaily experts, the desire of operators to install new base stations, primarily in large cities, also negatively affected the speed of the Internet.
“That is where the greatest demand for their services is. In addition, any communication difficulties in Moscow or St. Petersburg can become a source of serious image problems for the operator. And, on the contrary, no one will notice if the speed drops by 20-30% in a remote regional center,” said Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily.
Kommersant wrote that in 2022, operators reduced the installation of new base stations by 60% due to a shortage of foreign equipment from Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei. Existing warehouse stocks went to repair existing networks.
