Thus, Magnit plans to reduce the amount of food waste that is sent to landfills. In addition to selling expired goods to counterparties, the company is also going to optimize its purchases from suppliers and transfer products for processing. The retailer’s goal is to cut waste in half by 2025.
The documents note that the company has already started concluding agreements with partners on the sale of delays. As part of the project, Magnit specialists have developed a new scheme for writing off products that may be useful for other purposes. The company clarified that the expired goods are going to be sold to companies that produce feed and fertilizers.
The initiative will be implemented within the framework of government decree No. 1612 dated 07.10.2020 – this document established the procedure for withdrawing hazardous products from circulation. It follows from it that when the safety of a product is established by an examination, it can be sent for processing.
Formerly the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Economic Development approved the idea of developing a foodsharing program. For the implementation of the pilot project took X5 Group (manages the retail chains Perekrestok, Pyaterochka, Karusel) together with ANO Foodsharing and the Rus Food Fund. As part of the project, the company donates food to needy people, the expiration date of which is already coming to an end, but it is still possible to consume it.
