Izvestia learned about strengthening the protection of a new payment method with the Mir card using a QR code

The National Payment Card System (NSPK) plans to launch a new settlement system, thanks to which it will be possible to pay with the Mir card using the phone screen and the QR code generated on it. About it reported Izvestia with reference to the NSPK technical bulletin.

It is clarified that the new payment method must be tokenized, that is, the QR code should contain not the buyer’s bank data, but only a link to them. The requirements will come into effect on April 25.

The NSPK explained that this measure is necessary, since the QR code that the buyer will present for payment may be seen by others or recorded by cameras, as a result of which bank card data may be at risk. Tokenization will increase the security level of using this payment method.

The fact that Mir card holders will be able to pay using a QR code generated on the screen of a smartphone has become known in June 2022. The new payment method became available for implementation by credit institutions in the fall, but customers do not yet have the opportunity to use this feature.
