Izvestia: foreign intermediaries refuse to supply iPhone to Russia

The newspaper notes that in Russia there may be a shortage of smartphones in the medium and premium segments, including the iPhone. The reason for the refusal of foreign companies to work with Russian ones was the new US sanctions imposed on February 24, which prohibit the import of devices worth more than $300 into Russia. The interlocutor admits that the supply of Chinese and South Korean gadgets that use American patents and technologies may also be under threat.
At the same time, another source of the publication claims that so far there have been no refusals to cooperate on the part of foreign suppliers. He added that “this is a matter of time”, noting that not all intermediaries are ready to take the risks associated with the supply of electronics to Russia.
The manager of one of the Russian distributors drew attention to a large number of options for parallel import schemes. At the same time, he did not rule out a rise in prices due to the possible lengthening of intermediary chains. The source could not estimate how much the cost of devices will increase. Another interlocutor in the consumer electronics market countered that it was not a problem for the US to define the supply chain. In his opinion, not all foreign companies will want to play such a “Russian roulette”.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade reported that there was no information about the termination of deliveries of smartphones to the Russian Federation by foreign distributors. The department added that due to the sanctions, there is no shortage and price increase for premium smartphones. They noted that they are preparing the fifth edition of the list of goods allowed for parallel import, which will include products that fall under the new sanctions.
USA expanded sanctions against Russia February 24 – the anniversary of the start of the special operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. The US Treasury has blacklisted 83 legal entities and 22 individuals. Restrictions also affected the supply of smartphones worth over $300 to Russia. In addition, the export of microwave ovens, hair dryers, coffee machines, vinyl players over $100, refrigerators over $750, etc. is prohibited.
