Italian director Paolo Taviani died in Rome at the age of 92, writes la Repubblica. The director worked in a creative union with his brother Vittorio, who died in 2018. The Taviani brothers became famous for their films Caesar Must Die (2011), A Man to Burn (1962) and The Master Father (1977).
la Repubblica writes that Paolo Taviani died in the Rome clinic Villa Pia, surrounded by his wife Lina and children Ermanno and Valentina. Farewell to the director will take place on March 4 in the Protomotheca hall in the Capitoline Palace.
The Taviani brothers have been working on making films for 50 years. Together they made more than 20 films. For one of them, “Caesar Must Die” (2011), the directors became nominees for the Italian Golden Globe. In addition, the film received five David di Donatello awards, two prizes at the Berlin Film Festival, and three nominations for the European Film Academy Award.
The directors also received the Palme d’Or at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival for The Master Father, the Grand Prix at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival for The Night of Saint Lorenzo, and the Golden George medal at the 2002 Moscow International Film Festival for the film Resurrection. In 2022, Paolo Taviani presented his last film, “Farewell Leonora!” at a competition in Berlin. The film tells how the ashes of playwright Luigi Pirandello are transported from Rome to Sicily. The film became the first solo work of Paolo Taviani, filmed without the participation of his brother.
