Edition The Hollywood Reporter shared a list of which films various countries submitted to the Oscars this year.

Belgium

“Close”

Lucas Dont’s film, which debuted as a director in 2018, is a heartbreaking drama about a strong friendship between two 13-year-old boys that comes to an abrupt end. In Cannes, he received the Grand Prix.

Argentina

“Argentina, 1985”

The film tells the story of a team of heroic lawyers who take it upon themselves to bring the leaders of the country’s bloody military dictatorship to justice in order to restore justice.

Austria

“Corset”

Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread”) won the Best Performance Award at Un Certain Regard at Cannes for playing the tortured 19th-century Austrian Empress Elisabeth in this fictional and intellectual tale directed by Marie Kreuzer. The film begins on Christmas Eve 1877, when Elizabeth, once idolized for her youthful beauty, turns 40 and tries to maintain her public image despite claims that she is no longer as pretty.

Mexico

“Bardo”

This poignant satirical epic by Alejandro G. Iñárritu – about a prominent Los Angeles-based Mexican journalist who faces an existential crisis upon his return home – is filled with big ideas about family relationships, cultural identity and the price of fame.

Poland

“EO”

The film is a loose retelling of Robert Bresson’s 1966 masterpiece Au Hasard Balthazar, EO Jerzy Skolimowski, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes this year. He tells the story of an offended donkey as he travels and suffers through modern Europe. The film is more comical and absurd, as well as visually far more experimental than Bresson’s religious allegory. According to the publication, this latest work of the 84-year-old Polish author is not inferior to the original in its fury against human greed and cruelty.

Denmark

“Holy Spider”

This serial killer thriller from Iranian-born Danish director Ali Abbasi has already become one of the most critically acclaimed – and controversial – films of the year. It is inspired by the true story of a man who killed sex workers in Iran’s holy city of Mashhad. It premiered at Cannes where Zar Amir Ebrahimi won the Best Actress award. The Iranian government condemned the film as “fake, hateful and disgusting” and such a review could only increase the film’s chances of winning an Oscar, the publication said.

Germany

“All Quiet on the Western Front”

The first-ever German adaptation of the World War I anti-war classic (Lewis Milestone’s 1930 film won the Oscar for Best Picture), Edvard Berger’s epic for Netflix starring Daniel Brühl, Albrecht Schuch and Felix Kammerer is a rebuke to more heroic depictions of conflict, seen in recent Oscar contenders in 1917 and Dunkirk. It shows the mass extermination of young people for vague political purposes.

Spain

“Alcarraz”

Winner of the Carla Simon Berlin International Film Festival, which tells the story of a family of peach farmers in a small village in Catalonia who learn that their summer harvest is to be their last. The film featured non-professional actors from the Spanish region. The picture shows the clash between traditional agriculture and an upcoming industry that is transforming rural communities around the world.

Ukraine

“Klondike”

Sundance award winner Marina Er Gorbach uses the tragic story of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014, which was shot down over Donbass in Ukraine, as a backdrop to tell a broader story of personal and political upheaval that preceded the country’s current crisis.

According to the publication, the painting looks like the undisputed favorite of this international race.
